The bay was named after Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, by the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama. St Helena Bay also served as a popular stopover for ships traveling between Europe and the East, with many shipwrecks still visible today. The town of St Helena Bay was established in the late 1800s as a fishing village and has since become a popular destination for holidaymakers and home buyers seeking a peaceful seaside lifestyle.

Apart from its rich history, St Helena Bay boasts an array of marine life. The bay is home to three prominent bird islands, which serve as important breeding sites for various bird species. Marine wildlife such as whales, dolphins, and seals can also be spotted in the area, providing an opportunity for nature lovers to appreciate the beauty of the ocean. In addition, the annual Snoek run, a migration of snoek fish along the West Coast this starts in May, is a popular attraction for fishing enthusiasts in St Helena Bay.
